Unico - World Festivals

Welcome to ‘Unico’- a new festival calendar, covering some of the unique events unknown to many, bizarre to others and nostalgic to locals. The calendar will be revised monthly until we have a collection for a full year. Everyone is encouraged to participate by suggesting festivals below in the comments.

Enjoy!

March 2009

March (day of full moon)
Holi
All over Nepal

Holi, also known as the Festival of colour, is one of the most picturesque festivals in the world. On the day of full moon everyone throws buckets of paint at each other. The celebration symbolizes the good over evil and the transition into spring. Historically, Holi was one of God’s favourite festivals and apparently one year he got carried away.

March
Egg Bashing
Bern, Switzerland
Bern is known for its unique festivals, and throwing eggs at each other has become a city-wide tradition. Bring your own eggs, or buy them at the premises. And don’t forget an extra set of clothes in case you get bashed.

March 6 - 8
Psychic Expo
Toronto, Canada
Up to 75 exhibitors will gather in Toronto from around the world to show you the invisible, to look into the unknown. Learn about different gem stones and their natural healing powers, get rid of your aches and pains through massage and aroma therapy, learn about different holistic practices and nutrition.

March 13 - 15
Chandler Ostrich Festival
Chandler, USA
Have you ever watched grown men on top of ostriches trying to race through a track? The ostrich is the largest and only two-toed bird on earth, capable of running at a speed of 60 km/h… which makes this event even more amusing.

March 14
Wildfoods Festival
Hokitika, New Zealand
This year marks the 20th anniversary of Wildfoods Festival! Chocolate dipped snails, ice cream topped with larvae, lively crickets. Everything is up for bites, come and enjoy an organic experience!

March 18
Galungan
Bali, Indonesia
This is the most important holiday in Bali, symbolizing the victory of virtue upon evil. On the right side of every house you will see a tall bamboo pole decorated with coconut leaves, fruits and flowers as a symbol of celebration.

March 27 – April 6
The Sand Marathon
Ouarzazate, Morocco
One of the most intense marathons of the world takes place in the sands of Morocco. 7 days, 240km, and 2 bottles of water. Watch the video to be inspired.
